Founding Machine Learning Engineer

Location: Barcelona, Spain

The individual will join a recently funded biotech/AI company as an early technical hire, focused on building and deploying machine learning models for complex biological and scientific problems.

The role requires someone with strong mathematical, physics or machine learning foundations, who is comfortable working with sparse, noisy and limited datasets rather than relying on large, clean data environments.

Key responsibilities:

• Build, train and deploy machine learning models for complex real-world systems
• Develop models that can perform effectively with sparse, noisy or limited datasets
• Work closely with scientific and experimental teams to understand biological challenges and translate them into technical solutions
• Support the design of modelling approaches, evaluation methods and deployment strategies
• Contribute to the technical direction of the company as an early/founding hire
• Build practical ML solutions that can move beyond research into usable outputs

Required experience:

• Strong background in Machine Learning, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related quantitative field
• Proven experience building and deploying machine learning models
• Experience working with sparse, noisy, complex or limited datasets
• Strong problem-solving ability and first-principles thinking
• Comfortable working in an early-stage environment with high ownership

Beneficial experience:

• Biotech, life sciences or biological data experience
• Experience in other complex/data-constrained industries such as nuclear, manufacturing, aerospace or similar
• Experience working closely with scientific, research or experimental teams
• Start-up or founding-team experience
