Role Description

We are seeking a motivated EcoDesign & Environmental Assessment Engineer to support future sustainability initiatives at the European Space Agency’ Clean Space Office.

This role focuses on improving the environmental performance of systems and activities

across their full lifecycle, from development to end-of-life.

As part of a growing team, you will initially work with a high degree of autonomy and

responsibility, contributing directly to the structuring and development of environmental

assessment activities. Over time, you will support the expansion of capabilities and

collaboration across projects and stakeholders.

The successful candidate will contribute to environmental assessments of complex systems,

technologies, and industrial processes, supporting the development and use of Life Cycle

Assessment (LCA) methodologies and databases. The position involves analysing

environmental impacts, interpreting results, and contributing to sustainable design

approaches and continuous improvement initiatives.

You will work in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with engineering teams and

stakeholders to integrate environmental considerations into projects and support broader

sustainability strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain LCA data & models: Collect, validate, and analyse technical

data; build models (e.g., in SimaPro); and create, verify, and update datasets within

the ESA LCA Database.

  • Conduct environmental assessments: Perform Life Cycle Assessments (LCA),

analyse results, and evaluate improvement scenarios for space systems and

technologies.

  • Support sustainability & eco-design strategies: Monitor relevant technologies

and studies, contribute to ESA’s EcoDesign framework, and help guide sustainability

roadmaps.

Qualifications

Education Background

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Industrial Ecology, Sustainability

Science, or similar

  • Studies in Aerospace Engineering are considered an asset
  • Strong interest in sustainability applied to the space sector

Technical Skills

  • Strong LCA expertise (ISO 14040/44), including modelling and datasets
  • Experience with LCA tools and databases (e.g. SimaPro, ecoinvent)
  • Knowledge of eco-design principles and environmental regulations
  • Strong analytical skills; familiarity with complex engineering systems is a plus

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and synthesis capabilities
  • Organised, rigorous, and able to work autonomously
  • Comfortable working with technical experts and industry stakeholders
  • Fluent in written and spoken English

Desirable Assets

  • Experience in sustainability projects related to space, aeronautics, or advanced

manufacturing

  • Familiarity with ESA standards or the space mission lifecycle
  • 4 years’ experience in LCA applied to complex systems
