Staff Software Engineer I (Architect)

Rate: €60/hour (€480/day)

Contract length: 3–6 Months, ASAP Start

Location: Madrid

Working arrangement: Hybrid – 2 days per week onsite (including Tuesdays)

The Role

As a Staff Engineer (Architect), you will lead the design and evolution of scalable systems that assess and improve map quality at scale. You’ll play a critical role in enabling faster, data-driven, and cost-effective decision-making. This is a high-impact, architecture-focused role , ideal for someone who thrives on designing complex systems and influencing technical direction across multiple teams.

What You’ll Do

• Lead the end-to-end architecture design across multiple teams
• Develop clear structures for complex distributed systems , including integrations and data flows
• Drive solutions for large-scale, high-impact technical challenges
• Act as a technical leader and mentor , elevating engineering standards across teams
• Collaborate with cross-functional and distributed teams to align architecture and delivery
• Design and implement data lakes and high-throughput data pipelines (“data highways”)
• Champion best practices in engineering, testing, and operational excellence
• Contribute across the full lifecycle: requirements, design, development, integration, and testing
• Build scalable, resilient applications using Azure cloud technologies
• This position is primarily architecture-driven , with hands-on coding as needed

What You’ll Bring

• Degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)
• Proven experience as a Technical Architect, Solutions Architect, or Staff Engineer
• Strong expertise in system design and large-scale architecture
• Proficiency in Python
• Experience with or exposure to Scala
• Hands-on experience with Azure cloud services
• Strong background in data engineering , including: data lakes; distributed data systems & large-scale data processing
• Proven track record of building high-performance, scalable systems in production
• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices (SDLC)
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills in English

Nice to Have

• Spanish language skills
• Experience with event-driven architectures or big data frameworks
• Background working in enterprise-scale environments
